The Communications Operator provides effective and efficient internal and external hospital communications among staff, patients and providers. The operator also functions as receptionist and welcome center to all incoming patients, guests and vendors.
Answers calls to the switchboard in an appropriate manor.
Pages physicians and authorized hospital personnel.
Processes codes, fire alarms, STAT calls, and emergency calls, according to medical center policies and procedures.
Receives disaster information, notifies proper personnel and departments. Signals all clear when appropriate.
Maintains and accesses database of hospital facilities, personnel and department telephone numbers, as well as pertinent non-hospital locations
Maintains and accesses departmental and physician on-call lists.
Maintains appropriate confidentiality in all types of information
Reviews all related switchboard information at the beginning of the shift.
Excellent customer service skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, computer literate (Microsoft Office)
Make sound decisions when needed and works independently without direct supervision to complete assigned tasks/duties.
Understands operation of all related switchboard equipment and alarms.
Participate in department performance improvement activities as assigned and attends required training and compliance with medical center and departmental policies, practices and procedures.
High school diploma or GED Required
Previous experience in healthcare preferred
Knowledge of telephone, voice mail, paging, and alarm systems preferred
2 years of experience in the field or in a related area preferred
