Assistant Chief of the Dental Service either directly or indirectly supervises the performance of staff privileged and/or employed in the Service at the Dayton VA Dental Clinic and reports directly to the Chief of Dental. The Assistant Chief additionally serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of common encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective. Scope of Duties The Assistant Chief shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry. Specifically, the provider should provide direct patient care consistent with his/her clinical privileges and possess the expertise and competency to perform the following: Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity. Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions. Administer local anesthesia. Perform routine and complex restoration of teeth. Perform simple and complex extractions of teeth. Perform alveoloplasty and other routine surgical procedures. Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns and fixed bridge work. Perform routine endodontic procedures on single and multi-canal teeth. Perform routine and surgical periodontal procedures. Willingness to learn to utilize digital restorative technology in the practice of dentistry, such as CEREC and Digital Dentures. The Assistant Chief assumes responsibility for clinical and administrative activities of the service as determined by Chief of Dental, including but not limited to the following: Serves as direct supervisor for Dental Hygienists and Laboratory Technicians Provides information and addresses concerns of veterans in a timely and respectful manner. Assisting with the coordination and integration of interdepartmental processes and services. Establishing and sustaining policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services. Continuously assessing and improving the performance of care and services provided. Maintaining quality control programs, as appropriate. Orienting and providing in-service training and continuing education of all persons in the service. Assists with recommending staffing, space, equipment and other resources needed by the service. Participating in determination of dental eligibility and timely processing of community care consults. Adopting and partners with Chief of Dental to enforce rules and regulations concerning staff and veteran health care and safety, as well as the protection of their personal and property rights. Designating a person to act in his/her absence so that administrative direction is provided at all times and provides coverage in absence of the Chief.
